Hytale Guide: How to Find and Get Thorium Ore

If you have decked yourself out in full Iron gear and are wondering “What’s next?”, the answer is Thorium. However, many new players get stuck here because Thorium is incredibly rare in the starting area.

Here is the expert breakdown on how to find the “Green Ore” and craft Tier 3 gear.

1. Where to Find Thorium (The Location)

The most important rule for finding Thorium is: Leave the Starting Zone.

  • Go to Zone 2 (The Howling Sands): You need to travel to the edge of the map until the lush green forest transitions into a dry, canyon-filled desert biome called the Howling Sands.
  • Look for Green Nodes: Unlike Copper (Orange) or Iron (Silver), Thorium ore is distinctively Green.
  • The “Mountain Side” Strategy: The safest and easiest way to find your first batch is to scan the sides of the large rocky mountains and cliffs in the desert. The green ore often sticks out on the surface of these cliffs, allowing you to grab it without fighting deep-cave monsters.
  • Deep Caves: If you need large quantities, you must go into the deep caves within the Howling Sands. Be warned: these caves contain much harder enemies than the starting zone.

Note: It is technically possible to find Thorium very deep underground in the starting Zone 1 if you are extremely lucky, but it is inefficient. Go to the desert instead.

2. Preparation: What Pickaxe Do You Need?

This is where Hytale differs significantly from Minecraft.

  • No Upgrade Needed: You do NOT need an Iron Pickaxe to mine Thorium.
  • Use the Crude Pickaxe: You can harvest Thorium ore using the basic Crude Pickaxe (the first one you craft). This allows you to skip grinding for an Iron tool if you want to rush straight to Thorium.

3. How to Process Thorium (Smelting)

Once you have the raw ore, head back to your base.

  • The Furnace: Place the Thorium Ore into a Furnace with fuel (Coal or Wood) to smelt it into Thorium Ingots.
  • Pro-Tip: Remember that you can queue multiple types of ore in the Hytale furnace. You can put Copper, Iron, and Thorium in at the same time, and it will smelt them in order.

4. How to Craft Thorium Gear (The “Hidden” Requirement)

Having the ingots is not enough. You cannot craft Thorium armor or weapons on a basic Workbench. You must perform a Tier 2 Upgrade.

Step A: Upgrade the Workbench

Open your Workbench and look at the “Upgrade” tab on the right. You must pay the following resources to upgrade it to Tier 2:

  • 30 Copper Ingots
  • 20 Iron Ingots
  • 20 Linen Scraps (These drop from Skeletons)

Step B: Upgrade the Anvil

To craft Thorium weapons (Swords, Maces, Daggers), you also need to upgrade your Blacksmith’s Anvil to Tier 2 using similar resources.

Once these stations are upgraded, the “locked” recipes for Thorium Helmets, Chestplates, and Weapons will become available to craft.

Summary Checklist

  1. Pack your bags and run to Zone 2 (The Desert).
  2. Scan the cliff sides for Green Ore.
  3. Mine it with any pickaxe (even Crude).
  4. Kill Skeletons to get Linen Scraps.
  5. Upgrade your Workbench to Tier 2.
  6. Craft your new gear and dominate the Howling Sands!
